cavity fillings - everything you need to know

What exactly are dental fillings?
Dental fillings are used to repair cracks and holes in a tooth, caused by general damage or a cavity. Dental fillings can be created from many different materials. At A Plus Dentistry, we use modern filling materials such as composite resin, resin hybrids, and glass ionomer resin. Each of these has been proven in clinical studies, and are popular among patients as they are tooth-colored. In our office, we don’t use silver amalgam.

How permanent are dental fillings?
How long a filling lasts depends on the quality of the filling, as well as the patient's dental hygiene. No matter how careful you are, there is always the possibility that a filling will wear off, crack, or fall out. Cavity fillings, in particular, are sensitive and require special attention in order to last a long time. For the best results always follow the instruction of your dentist and dental hygienist.

What happens if my filling falls out?
You will likely notice if your filling falls out, as your tooth will become highly sensitive. A filling coming loose can be an issue in the long term, as this can cause bacterial infection, which can cause a cavity or other problems. To avoid this, you should book an appointment with your dentist to replace the filling as soon as possible.
