What is a root canal, and when does it need to be performed?

During the procedure, an access opening is made in the crown of the tooth, in order to allow access to the canals of the tooth in the root. Once the nerve is removed, the dentist will remove all signs of infection, and then fill the canal to stabilize the tooth. The tooth will then be sealed so bacteria cannot infect the tooth further. After root canal treatment is completed it is usually necessary that the tooth will be fitted with a custom made crown to provide an additional layer of protection from infection and fracture. 

 

What happens if I have another abscess or infection?

There is always the chance that infection can reappear after a root canal treatment. In these cases, a second root canal procedure may be required. Your dentist will also likely prescribe antibiotics to help with aftercare and healing.

 

What is the recovery process and period like after a root canal?
Recovery time from a root canal is often between 2 and 3 weeks, during this time you will be required to come back for an additional check-up. Low oral health, such as improper brushing can dramatically slow down the healing process, and increase the risk of further infection. Always carefully follow your dentist's post-op instructions during the entire healing process.
